Didn't go unnoticed at the F-2 house. I guess any publicity is good publicity.

Hmmm, so 50% of the population doesn't know the difference between a banjo and a mandolin.

I must be very lucky to play both.

I guess Dobro playing gets the door prize.

You know, that reveals statistically just how obsessed we really are.

Hey, better attention than we're getting on HBO's Crashing. Twice now I've heard the main character hurl this insult...
"Go tune a mandolin, you $:@!!"

But maybe, he's also confusing the banjo for a mandolin. ;)

I'm always amazed that people don't know the difference between common, modern instruments. sigh. I had someone post a video link on facebook directed at me (because she knows I play MANDOLIN) ... "I've never seen a banjo played like this before" and linked to someone playing very high-excitement modern uke. I really was tempted to put up the shaking head emoji!

Hmmm, so 50% of the population doesn't know the difference between a banjo and a mandolin.

Actually, I would guess that the percentage is much lower than that...

Sad thing is, that guy with the wrong answer was the eventual winner.

Jeopardy doesn't always get it right either. I've been tempted on a number of occasions to set them straight about the Chicago "Black Sox." The Black Sox had that nickname long before the 1908 World Series - not because of it. Manager Comisky was so cheap he wouldn't pay to have their uniforms cleaned, so the cost came out of each individual players pocket. So their uniforms rarely got washed. Their competitors nicknamed them the "Black Sox." It's not quite as exciting, but it's been verified.

This is too good to pass up. One of my favorite tidbits that I uncovered while researching Gibson for my book is an incidence that happened shortly after they moved their factory to Harrison Court in 1909. The police were called by a resident of the neighborhood complaining about the noise. They claimed that "Tuning a mandolin sounds nothing like music!" and demanded that it stop.

I recently shipped my mandolin off to Steve Perry for some work. I shipped it Fed Ex and packed it at the store since they had good packing materials. While I was doing it the person working there said "Oh that's cool. Is it a banjo?"

So on the one hand nobody knows WTF these things are, but on the other hand, they recognize it as an old-timey American instrument. Nobody is confusing a mandolin with a harp or a lute, and nobody is saying "oh, that's a weird looking violin," even though that's kind of what it is.

That's ok, just so Steve Perry knows what it is.

My family was watching that episode also, and my teenage daughters laughed when he said banjo. They couldnt believe that someone smart enough to be on jeopardy didn't know that Bill and Ricky played the mandolin. I had to explain to them that he probably plays the banjo. LOL
