I play mostly old time and Celtic music. Not much bluegrass. My current mandolin is a Lafferty A model with oval sound hole by Paul Schneider of Summit. I have examined three Cross mandos and have one I'm interested in. Bird's eye maple and nice Sitka top, honey burst finish. I like this mando. Good workmanship, nice recurve, sharp lines. The tone is nice; certainly different than the decidedly old time sounding Lafferty. The Cross is sweet,
with good definition. The Cross seems a little heavy, with a top that looks a little a little thick.

What do you familiar with Cross Mandolins think?

The decision is one only you can make. If you like it, it sounds good to you, you have won most of the battle. My Brentrup has a heavy top, it doesn't overdrive and sounds great, I wouldn't let that worry you. I will admit I am not familiar with Cross mandolins, but if you like it yada yada yada.
