I just notice the "abbreviated" scrol on this Lebeda F5 Jazz. I kinda like it, in a way. What's the concensus?

and here's a shot of the back. (These are borrowed from The Acoustic Music Company www.theacousticmusicco.co.uk)

Not my taste because it makes the instrument look unbalanced. Compare it with the Andersen F scroll, which is very different, but still looks proportionate.

Tough to strap that baby.

Don't like F styles with A-stylish (symetric or almost symetric) headstocks.

Don't like A styles with F-stylish (very asymetric) headstocks.

Just don't work for me. The body and the headstock gotta kinda match.

Oh yeah, don't much care for un-open scrolls either.

Course I can like or not like anything I want when I don't have any $$$ or a new mando anyway.

The real question is, will it hold a strap? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Where's MandoJeremy when we need him?

Looks nice. Go with what you think. How it sounds and plays is what really counts. A piece of raw hide around the scroll will hold the strap, Ricky Skaggs has done it that way.

Aesthetically I like it for several reasons. One, it does look cool. Second, it does not look like a Gibson. Three, I just do http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif .

I thought the whole idea of making a scroll was to make it look like a Gibson. A 1910-24 Gibson, that is.

I agree; it looks half-done. I say do it the whole way or not at all. You could do a variation, like Monteleone, and it would look better. That headstock would look nice on a two-pointer.

Just doing a once over of it, everything looks kinda cheap or not well done. Except the finish is nice!

There you have it - there is no concensus :-)

My feelin is no matter how long you played it, it wouldn't open up. #Ba-dum-dum. #I kinda like the non traditional peg-heads I've seen on some F styles (esp. the Bulldog one posted awhile back). #I don't like the closed scroll much. #Without the cutout it looks too heavy. The Heiden mandos have bigger scrolls but still look finished. I kinda dig the pulled out hook shape on the Holst's and Dearstones. #I will say it looks unique and distinct. #

If it plays well and you don't like looking like everyone else I say that's a great mando to go with.

I prefer the look of Lebeda's two point J-5's over their Jazz 5's. #I agree with the Prof -- the Monteleone scroll does appear to be a more complete design. # I think the headstock looks great! #Perhaps if Gibson produced an "F-0" with a closed scroll back in '23 we'd all love it.

Me? #I wimped out & got an F-5 Standard... #(!)

I'm afraid the closed scroll reminds me too much of the lumpy A models (A12??, an A model with a tumor) that Gibson produced in the 60's. If it's going to have a different scroll/cutaway I like it better to be more open rather than less (e.g. Monteleone's, or completely different, like the Rigel I'm about to win next week http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

The Lebeda Jazzica, I got a couple years back [2nd hand] is essentially the Monte style headstock and an F5 body, his regular scroll job, tort binding , singlemalt toner in the finish. so the variations continue.

Maybe you could get Bill Bussman to do a scrollectomy!

I'm here Pete. #My official ruling is that I don't really care much for it. #It does look too much like the old Gibson lumpy mandos. At least I didn't say that it looked weird. I guess it is okay if you are in to it but I prefer the look of the Andersen that was referenced earlier.

I'm kinda with JEStanek... the closed scroll looks heavy. My first impression was that it would be okay if it were a little smaller. It definately doesn't look "cheap" to me; nice crisp crest on the scroll, nice binding, "point protector" on the bottom point. It just looks a little unbalanced to me.

Dr. Dave Cohen's C# model is a great looking partial scroll, imo. Sound-wise, competes w/ any f-model I've played - except one Gilchrist at the Joe Val Fest.

If we're discussing scroll alternates; I'm quite enamored with the Gallatin. Would be nice to see a Gallatin fully adorned with body binding.

it does not look like a Gibson.
Well, not exactly.
