I'm never one to do things the easy way, not if I can fiddle and poke interesting stuff along the way. So after years of dismantling, fettling, breaking and fixing kit, I ended up as a broadcast engineer making TV stations and studios for a living.

In my (ever more scarce) leisure time I often make and mash-up stuff like old amps, stage looms and he like. However Part from a few bass amps, a keyboard mash-up and a distortion pedal I've not done much instrument electronics.
I'm mulling over doing a preamp for my mandolin, even tough it's not needed for the amp I use the KM150/JJB220 with. In fact I hardly ever use it anyway as I use a body worn lavallier to make swapping mando to fiddle or cello simple mid tune or in theatre productions.
I just can't not try or my inner fidget would never forgive me, so think it might be good to mess up something in case I ever need to go to a PA direct.

Are there any recommendations for places to start geeking up on making studio qualiy kit? (Professionally I always have to hand custom kit out to specialists nowadays as it's too time consuming to justify by comparison with my £)

What gubbins have you had a go at, preamps? Pedals? Combined kit in one unit.

Kind of hoping this thread could get some nice gizmo ideas going too.

I've done a lot of pedal and electric guitar mods. With the pedals, I started off with a chart showing what each of the components did and went to town swapping resistors, caps, and diodes. Eventually, most of my pedals wound up with lifted traces and miles of jumper wires :)

I really want to build a low wattage amplifier, but I'm going to start with re-capping my '72 Fender Super Reverb.

Not trying to hyjack, but when you recap that Fender don't forget to replace the cap in the bias too.

I recently received a little Linux Computer, a NanoPi Neo. It has decent audio in and audio out and is just 40mm x 40mm in size.
So I just started to build a digital guitar - or in my case eMandola - pedal.
So far I had acceptable results with guitarix but suffer stability issues. Lets see...
