A few years back I used to hear a song on the radio called Whispering Pines. I am not sure who sang it, but it seemed "oldtime" to me. (I liked it because it mentioned happy squirrels.) Is it tradtional or modern? And what are the lyrics? I can pick it out on my mando, but I have forgotten the words. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Was that the one sung by Johnny Horton? Same guy that did "North to Alaska", which I really get a kick out of.

I read he was from the Denver area and was trained in geology. He looks like a drill-rig guy in the photos I've seen.

The song was indeed recorded by Johnny Horton
(1925-1960). He grew up in Texas and died in
a car crash in his home state.

The lyrics are here:

The composer seems to be one H. Hausey,
probably a house composer for Horton

On a related note, check out "Whispering Pines" by The Band.

Truly a beautiful tune.

Iris Dement did a great cover of the song from the Horse Whisperer soundtrack. Great version, which is pretty much the norm for Iris. It's been awhile since I listened to it but I seem to remember it has a nice mando break.

Her name was Billy Jean, I forget her last name.
She was Hank Williams' second wife.
