I was lucky enough to be at a recording session in 1974, where Vassar overdubbed a break with a flat picked fiddle: Soldier's Joy on Pat Burton's album: "We've been waiting for this", on Flying Fish. You can't really see what kind of pick he used here, but at that session he used a quite thin blue teardrop pick. That stuck in my mind. Long before the time of Blue Chip and such.
He was a fantastic musician, and a wonderful person.

True that. I was fortunate to record with him one time, on a banjo man's project in NYC. Also on the session were Barry Mitterhoff, Tony Trischka, Bob Harris, others. Vassar didn't know me, but made me feel right at home and loose.

Ricky does the same thing here on this version of Sally Goodin from an 82' Austin City Limits Show; check time index 2:41-3:15 I think
Of course he probably got it from Vassar...LOL!

What kind of effect does that guitar player have going? Turns a nice flattop into the sound of a cheap electric. Yuck. Nice picking though.
