I just got a few iTune cards to download some music and wonder what you have to suggest that has mandolin content. I'm mainly looking for something other than bluegrass, but if you have a great BG disc you want to recommend, go ahead.

Recent music that has interested me include:

The Creaking Tree String Quartet
Andrew Collins Trio ~ A Play on Words
Julien Martineau ~ Calace's preludes for Solo Mandolin
Carlo Aonzo & Katsumi Nagaoka ~ Kaze
Leftover Salmon ~ Aquatic Hitchhiker

So what's on your playlist that you enjoy?

It goes without saying that you should have some David Grisman Quintet or Quartet, Songs of Our Fathers and any of the Tone Poems stuff. Good luck.

Choro: Jacob de Bandolim Mandolin Master of Brazil OCR vol. 1

Classical/Baroque: Avi Avital's Bach and Vivaldi albums are both really great.

Nominally Rock: Col. Bruce Hampton and The Aquarium Rescue Unit Eponymous live album. This is one of those bands that didn't last very long but the musicians almost all went on to do other things. To my knowledge, Matt Mundy doesn't play professionally anymore, but he was a fantastic mandolin player. Jimmy Herring went on to play guitar for The Dead and Widespead Panic. Otheil Burbridge played bass with the Allman Brothers. Just monster players playing amazing, genre bending music.

The first eponymous David Grisman Quintet album should be required listening for every mandolin player.

Taarka is an awesome band fronted by Enion and David Pelta-Tiller.
David is an outstanding mandolin player and Enion just as great on fiddle. Their album is backed by guitarist Ross Martin and bassist Sam Grisman, and number of other great musicians. Certainly worth the $10!

I 2nd the DGQ suggestion. I've been listening to Dawg's Groove a lot lately.

I'm also particularly fond of 2 disc set Live at Jazz Alley:

I'm also currently hooked on
The Bumpy Road by John Reischman & John Miller

Not sure if it's on iTunes yet but the new CD from John Reischmann, Sharon Gilchrist, and Scott Nygaard is great! I've just about worn it out since I picked it up a few weeks ago.

Watch some YouTube vids of Willie Sugarcaps, my favorite group right now, and Mandolin Orange has a few cuts with mandolin.

But right now Willie Sugarcapps is the one. Four writers, four singers, and several multi instrumentalists playing a great style of roots music.

Thanks everyone so far for the recommendations. I just downloaded Mike Marshall & Darol Anger: The Duo Live ~ At Home and On the Range ~ great music and wonderful recording.

I have lots of Grisman and agree that he is wonderful. Avi Avital gets a lot of play at our house already and there isn't anything that we don't already have.

The Reischman/Gilchrist & Nygaard CD will also be downloaded as you can't have enough of Reischman.

Mandolin Orange will have a new CD out at the end of Sept ~ looking forward to that!

Keep the recommendations coming!

I'm totally entranced by Sierra Hull's latest CD, Weighted Mind. Sounds like nobody else. Original songs, with just vocals, mando, and acoustic bass on most tracks.
