View Full Version : Possible 1913 Gibson Mando-Bass prototype - short scale

This is a very interesting example of an early Style J mando-bass and possibly a prototype. Serial # 21576 would date to approx. late 1913, before the Style J was officially introduced. Based on the measurements provided, it has the same basic dimensions as a J, but with a 24 3/4" guitar scale length. I believe Eddie VanHalen owns another short-scale mando-bass, but don't know any details about it. I can't make out anything it says on the label, but it looks "Style" has the letter J. Very cool.

That auction ended on 8/9.
It was discussed a bit in THIS THREAD (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?125755-Gibson-Bass-Mandolin-on-Shop-Goodwill).
Your insight as to a possible prototype is appreciated. :)

Just finished dinner, the "cake frosting" on the back of the peghead is interesting!
