I don't know if this is the right place to post, but I'm looking for a luthier in the palm beach/broward area. Theres a place called Penny Lane that has a luthier they know, but you never if the owner is going to use him, and I don't know if he's even experienced at all. I need to get my mandos nut tinkered with, and I don't want to do it myself and mess it up, especially not on my more expensive mandolin. I just want to get a really good setup, cause I cannot fix this buzzing to save my life. I spent a good 5 hours trying to adjust this and that... everything short of filing the nut. Anyway, I know it's the nut cause I put paper under it and it went away. Anyone know a guy? Thanks

I'm pretty sure that Armando at Penny Lane Emporium farms out the bigger jobs to the Stype brothers at Tyler Mountain:

Other options include Bob Peterson of Angel Guitars in Port St. Lucie to the north:

And Grenville Thomassey is an authorized Martin repairman:

I hope this thread turns up more alternatives, as it'd be nice to have options without driving an instrument five hours to Ross Teigen in Hawthorne or incurring the additional risk and expense of shipping.

whoa ... damn thanks man! That's exactly what I was looking for. Yeah I wish florida had a larger mando presence in general.... and yeah I feel ya. Definitely don't wanna drive 5 hours or (dear God) ship my mandolin either. I cringe thinking about it.

What do you think of the work the Tyler Mountain guys do? Have you tried them out? (just for basic setup work mostly)

I've never used the Stype brothers, but they did own and operate The Banjo Shop down in Hollywood long before I got into the mandolin. They should be well experienced, and I have considered engaging them to perform some needed work on my Gibson and Passernig.

Thanks! I'm going to give them a try I think. I'll let you know how it goes.

Please do and I would certainly appreciate any alternatives that you (or these posts) manage to unearth!

Guitar Hospital in Delray: http://www.guitar-hospital.net/
I don't know Armando, I've never heard of Thomassey, but I've been out of touch for a while.
Bob Peterson is amazing, he used to say that the only things he couldn't fix are "the crack of dawn and the break of day." Bob had a shop in Hollywood in the '90's.
And the Stypes' Banjo Shop on Johnson St. is sorely missed. Haven't seen them in years, they can definitely take care of any problems.
I've had work done by all these guys over the last few decades.

Sadly, Bob's Facebook page says "relocating within the year to Blairsville, GA" and hasn't been updated since Christmas Eve. :(

I'd heard Bob had been having some health problems, I hope he's ok.

Another vote for The Amp Shop. Nice people and honest too. If they cannot help you they will know who can.

UPDATE: I went to the Stype Brothers. Not only did Dave fix my mandolin for next to nothing, but he let me sit there and watch him and worked with me on what exactly I wanted while he did it, and I have to add .... not only did he do a perfect job, Dave and Paul are probably two of the kindest people I've ever met. Unless I moved away, I won't bring my mandolin to anyone else.

Thanks for the help guys!

I have used Stype Brothers and Bob Peterson for guitar work and have nothing but high praise for both.

Bob is doing well - he has one of my Taylors right now for a NT neck reset, new saddle, and setup. He told me that his move is on hold for now so he'll be in Port St. Lucie for a while. He is very busy - lots of instruments in the shop.
