Absolutely no financial interest here, but I’ve been given the privilege of auditioning the new Phoenix Jazz (http://www.phoenixmandolins.com/jazz_model.htm) model mandolin, Rolfe Gerhardt’s latest foray into ground breaking mandolin design...

I’m working on a review of it for my website, and have only logged a few hours playing it, but my initial impressions are very, very good. Excellent fit and finish, cool “no-binding” look, terrific playability, and sustain to die for!

Woah! Do my eyes decieve me, or is that a magnetic pickup? How does it sound plugged in?
MORE PICTURES PLEASE!!!!

Also, excellent plug-in ability with a special custom-wound Ken Armstrong magnetic pickup, and piezo in the bridge for a wide range of tone blending capability (Stereo jack out accomplishes this). My transparent loyalties to Rigel and the craftsmanship of Dale Ludewig not withstanding, this mandolin is a serious contendor for any jazz mandolinist wannabe.

Back Flame. Almost needed an oven mitt to pick this one up…

More later, after I’ve had a chance to play it. Rolfe, I need some serious time with this. How about another 30 or 40 years?…

Wow, that's a sweet looking mando. #I love the black tuners. #Where does one get those? Better than more pics if you could upload an MP3 of something done with the stereo output to hear how she bops...

i got a chance to meet and talk with rolfe, and see the jazz model plates being carved out. The mandolins he makes are incredible, loud and full of tone on every range. i have no doubt that this mando is just as awesome (if not more) than his other models.

That is how one should use Macassar ebony. Lovely. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blues.gif

Help! Help! I want to combine these threads (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=24917) #- it's some kind of self-flagellation problem. #I can't even FIND either an Old Wave or a Phoenix of any stripe to hear 'em to make some kind of a decision. Any insights?
