Do we know of any good photo's of this mando? Is this the "Old and In the Way" Mandolin? The one with the block inlay, then the Apollon fingerboard? I am wanting to get a good eyeball on this "Old and In the Way" Mandolin...thanks, dy.

Not the greatest photos, but:

You might also want to try the "Shady Grove" album, as well as the first "Tone Poems".

Dan, those pictures are fantastic. I should know, I took them!

Yep #F5Joe goes way back too. Obviously, it was Joe, myself and Grisman there together checkin' out mandos. #As a matter of fact, at one point Joe had all that Grismanesque hair.. like in those pictures too, but I think Joe would agree that Grisman looks tame there compared to Mike Marshall who was standing just around the corner http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Smile, ps..the pictures are great, my scans of them aren't..note the very early Paganoni case it is in.

The finance and accounting side of me can't help but do the math on that collection. Rough estimate about $240,000. Wow how sweet is that.

If I'm not mistaken the Dawg's Fern is pictured in one of the Tone Poems booklets, that go with the CD's.
Might be Tone Poems I with Tony Rice.......someone check me on that, I don't have the booklets handy.

You are correct. He plays it on 'Dawg After Dark' on the first of the Tone Poems CDs. Tony is playing a 1939 Gibson J-100 on that one. The Griffith Loar and David's '23 Loar also make appearances in that book.

Geno---The photo is from a Frets rag in 88?

Yeah, June '88. None of us old guys in our right mind would throw away those old Frets. Here's the cover of that issue for the younger folks who missed it.

Yeah, the Kentucky is the only one of that batch worth risking for that cover shot. But he's probably not really balancing it, since you can't see the whole body. :-)

That dawg is the one on the cover of Dawg Grass/Dawg Jazz.

That dawg is the one on the cover of Dawg Grass/Dawg Jazz.
And the cover of Dawg '90.

Waittaminute, are we talking about the Dawg (plink-plink) or the dawg (woof-woof)? :-)

I remember see the quintet in '82? I believe it was the Mark O'conner era.
They were playing Ricochette -all on mandos of course, and at one part of the tune, they all started throwing their mandos up and catching them. Gently of course and with their straps on.
