Slight update 1/25/08

I posted something previously and have since found a few more resources.

Irish folk music sessions around Raleigh (http://www.ncfolk.net/sessions/) <1/08 - Content at the link has changed; there are more good choices!>

Zepp's beginner bluegrass jam (http://zeppmusic.com/Learningjams/learningjam.htm)

Zepp's advanced bluegrass jam (http://zeppmusic.com/bgjam.htm)

Banjo in the hollow (http://www.banjointhehollow.org/) - a local bluegrass club that puts on workshops, holds jams, etc.

raleighareapickers Yahoo group (http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/raleighareapickers) (bluegrass) <very little traffic these days 1/08>

Triangle Blues Society (http://www.triangleblues.com/)

Triangle (Durham) Folk Music (http://www.rtpnet.org/~folk/)

Also, check out:

Pinecone (http://www.pinecone.org)

and get to one of their shows or contact them to see about getting a newsletter (they give them out freely at all shows). I cannot find their newsletter online, but it has a page of local sessions that dwarfs any other list I have seen. You can join the organization and they are a worthy cause (basically promote traditional folk music), but it seems a bit hefty just to look over the listing.

not a jam session, but our band, The Parsons, will be playing at the Six String Cafe in McGregor Village (Cary- hwy 64) this Wednesday June 22nd.

come out for lots of good entertainment and music and say 'hi".
always a fun time & lots of mando content

.....oh, and to entise any mandolin pickers to come, i'll bring my NUGGET for anyone to 'taste' - although i will probably play "Zeus" (my paganoni) for the show - it rules!

While it isn't Raleigh proper or even mostly mandolin, the Cape Fear Blues Jam is coming up the end of this month (July) down in Wilmington. There are also regular blues jams around the town for both acoustic and electric fans. The link below is to the org that puts them together and has lots of local blues related info (more than the Raleigh one).

just got news that the great Six String Cafe in Cary will be closing this month. i dont know all the details, and it may possibly open up at a different location (i'm sure the rent there at McGregor Village is outragious) but its sad to see this one dedicated ACOUSTIC club close its doors. there has been a lot of really great music played there and its one of the few places left that would book bluegrass bands weekly.

Dang, that is bad news. Six String is a great place to hear live acoustic music. Hopefully they'll reopen closer to me in Chapel Hill....

Wah!

They still show a full month of bookings (http://sixstringcafe.com/site/calendar) today (8/2/2005) - it may change. The last time I was there a lesser known local band was playing and I doubt they had 20 people in the place. I know they get SRO crowds for national acts, but even with that it can't be much money to work with. I like that low cover, intimate atmosphere and reasonably priced table fare, but it must be really tough to make a buck that way.

Looking at the posts here and the schedule there again, I understand why the gypsy can foretell the future - the Parsons (his band) are showing on the schedule at the end of the month.

yep, thats how i got the news. i know david has a pretty hard time during the summer months - our crowds are always low during this time - it seems people have so much going on this time of year. it usually picks up in the fall thru winter.
you know, during all the times we've played there, there was never any table turnover (which is *good* for us- i.e. people like the band) but that is how i would think they would make money. folks would pay the cover and just enjoy the music, and being it was never really a drinking crowd, they couldnt have made much on the bar sales.
i dont really know when the actual date will be, but i know our show was unfortunately cancelled. i really liked playing there - it was ALWAYS a great crowd and show - you know, playing acoustic music, it is rare to have people actually sit there and listen and not be yapping and making a lot of distracting nose for the audience.
hopefully david can open another spot - i wouldnt think cary would be the best location for the acts he booked (i WILL miss eating sushi over at wasabi's before the shows though) - i would think he could do better in the chapel hill / durham area, although i hope he can keep it in cary/ral area.

i just went to the link you posted - boy, those are some great acts on the bill this month - i would like to at least get to see the Greenlevel Entertainers - Tony Williamson usually plays mando with them.

Another resource for open mic listings and to see who is playing where is the Independent Weekly (local circular) site for musical happenings.

Their front page (http://indyweek.com). I list that first because you may need to go there and then click on Music Calendar if this direct link (http://music.indyweek.com/gyrobase/MusicEvents/) doesn't work. You have to read the listings and look for open mics and go page to page and day to day or use their search. They have incredibly complete listings of who is playing where.

I have been hosting a few small porch pickings with an emphasis on acoustic blues. PM or email me if interested in that.

It's a local bluegrass club and puts on workshops, holds jams, etc.

The running monologue continues...

This time I am back to add, oddly enough, myself. I held a small bluegrass jam last night and we were all (just 4 last night) interested in continuing. It's beginner/intermediate. I don't want to make it huge, but I know how people start with the best intentions and drop out or just can't make it all the time. So I would prefer to add a few more to the list. It was Saturday night this time, but that isn't necessaily always when it will be. I am in Cary. Email for more info (and to confirm it's still on when this posting gets stale). If it falls apart, I will try to remember to come back and delete this posting.
