I love the John Hartford "Hamilton Ironworks" CD. A lot of traditional tunes with spoken/some-what sung stories to go along with them. The Gene Goforth CDs are nice too.

The current king of Appalachian old time fiddle tunes is Bruce Molsky. Any album of his is going to be loaded with tunes that he learned from Tommy Jarrell and others. There are a couple of volumes of CDs called "Music Of Kentucky: Early American Rural Classics" that have old time tunes from the old time fiddlers, mostly field recordings. Great stuff. Brittany Haas is a great young fiddler who is a student of Bruce Molsky and Darol Anger. She has her own album out now that has some great tunes. Check out www.brittanyhaas.com

I'll second Jim's Bruce Molsky recommendation. His music really flips my switch.

Virtually anything by Kenny Baker.
One of his best CD's is, "Frost on the Pumpkin."

Hey - there's lots ...Alan Jabbour, playing Henry Reed fiddle tunes, Rayna Geller. Bruce Molsky IS good. For a more modern touch, I've been listening lately to Dirk Powell...Down from the Mt. is a nice cd. Have fun in your explorations...lots of websites, too, if you put in old time appalachian fiddle tunes. You'll be swamped. G

There's tons of free John Hartford recordings at Bluegrassbox.com for downloading. (It's legal of course). Search the threads here to find help on how to use that site if you're interested.

What Jim M and ToneDeaf said ... Bruce Molsky! His "Contented Must Be" CD inspired me so much that I contacted him and almost bludgeoned him into agreeing to give me a lesson ... we've got the left hand in common at least so it should be a great experience. Anyway ... if you're looking for a great representation of this genre, look no further. Bruce is "the man"

Hey, great tip on the sugerinthegourd site. I tuned in to that for the first time last night.

Also look up fiddler Rhys Jones. I never remember the name of the guitar and banjo player in his group, but theirs is one of my favorite recent CDs. Also, Foghorn Stringband.
