Anybody have any good links to some wood sources? Nope not making instruments but want to try my hand at making grips and checkering for my 1911's

So I an looking for highly figured and dark or colorful wood, like cocobolo, zebra wood, lacewood, B.R. etc. and not so much spruce, cedar and maple.

Would be nice to find a place that would mill it to the length and thickness I need but not neccesary.

THANKS!

Try Gallery Hardwoods. (http://www.galleryhardwoods.com/) They supply hardwoods for backs, sides, necks, basses, and electric guitars. Larry Davis at Gallery has been a long time supporter of the Musical Instrument Makers Forum.

I guess others know what you are talking about, but for some reason I read this line four times and can't quite get it. Please elucidate.

Thats the COLT 1911 for the firearms challenged. It was the standard sidearm issued to the military and was in use for almost a century.

Hey Bruce- that is one cool link. I'll be able to use that one for many things. Thanks.

Ah, now it makes sense. I thought that it was checkered binding for a 1911 Gibson mandolin.

Here's a link to Wall Lumber (http://www.walllumber.com/default.asp).

For the size you want, you might look at turning blanks (for the lathe) on eBay and other places also.
