Finally broke down and bought "Best of Seldom Scene" CD and can't figure out what kind of mandolin Duffey is holding on the cover. On the inside is a better picture and I swear the mandolin's body looks like the hurricane symbol on the "Weather Channel" maps. I'm serious.

Thanks Scotti, "the duck"-LOL. No wonder I couldn't figure out what it was.

How does a duck look like the "hurricane symbol on the 'weather channel' maps?" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

The only thing I can reason from the name is that the mandolin has two duckbills protruding from opposite sides of the body with one above the neck. Interesting looking to say the least.

The peg head is the ducks head and the points are the ducks wings in flight, only John could have thought that one up....

A few weeks ago after church I was in Cracker Barrel waiting to eat and checking out the Old Country Store. I browse past the CD Kiosk and start flipping through different CD's and I see a compilation disk on the Seldom Scene: Creators of Urban Bluegrass. I had never heard them before...Oh My Goodness!!!....It was like hearing bluegrass for the first time all over again. The first track on that disk (Little Georgia Rose) just blew me away! That groove that the bass player lays down....man it's great! I have to say John Duffy's mandolin style is just what I needed to hear. For me it's like a mix of Bill Monroe blended with a jazz guitarist style. I love it. I'm sorry to ramble, but I am glad I finally found some of John's work and wanted to let some of his friends know that his music is still inspiring young pickers or at least this one anyway.:D
