Awhile back I was thinking how little mandolin content there is on NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts. But then I started to count, and it is actually a pretty respectable amount given that the series does not have any particular mandate and is not specifically dedicated acoustic music. While the guitar is obviously ubiquitous, I think the mandolin has a slight lead over the banjo. Here is the list of concerts which contain mandolin (and related instruments). Please let me know if there are others I have missed.

Nickel Creek
Punch Brothers
Ma, Meyer, Thile, Duncan
Thile and Daves
The Lone Bellows
Avi Avital
Woven Hand (some kind of mandolin/banjo hybrid?)
Shakey Graves
Sarah Jarosz
Frank Fairfield
Frank Turner
Rahim AlHaj (oud)

I mostly enjoy the spectrum of musicians on Tiny Desk, and don't necessarily think about aa shortage of mandolin playing. It's an interesting sample. It's fun to see your list--and to realize how much Chris Thile dominates the category.

One miss on the list is Mucca Pazza, which has a solid body electric mandolin buried in its huge (23 member) "performance art" group.

I don't even know if they air it, I just watch on YouTube.

JonDoug, I agree, TDC is really about variety. At the same time, with such a preponderance of indi-folk, you would expect to see mandolin more often than, say, shamisen. Not that I would mind a good shamisen performance.

Think of all the solo performers, then the rock, pop, soul acts. Mandolin is in a lot of the roots and Americana bands.

The Jayhawks visited WFUV (Public Radio Station at Fordham) recently. Not a TD Concert but has mandolin and great songs from their latest album.

An absolutely delightful Tiny Desk concert featuring Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers with tasteful, as always, mandola and mandolin from Mike Guggino, can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyHipL45pwM

Cheers.

You are welcome Caleb - they are one of my favorites also. We caught them at the Tarrytown Music Hall recently and they were outstanding. See them if you can; the new album is great.
