(CNN)Country music legend Merle Haggard, best known for such patriotic hits as "Okie From Muskogee" and "The Fightin' Side of Me," died Wednesday, his birthday, at his home in Northern California. He was 79.

One of my all time favorites, he will be missed but his music will live on for a long, long time.

I saw him just a few years ago, and he sounded as good as ever. What a great run, despite all the challenges!

He got better as he got older. No mandolin content, but a good banjo (and the rest of your typical BG instrumentation) can turn this one into a dandy BG song . . . RIP, Hag.
