Second that as a big first step. The all-important confidence to make recordings is obviously there, so these minor technical details should be easy to adress.

Thanks -- Getting a tuner is on the list for today -- my ear has always been good enough for guitar/fiddle/bouzouki but these machines on the mandolin seem a little finicky.

Boing B-9 (I think?) is similar. They've become my favorite lubricants for anything that shouldn't attract dust: hinges, plastic & aluminum window frames, tuners...
