View Full Version : Removing Finish From Back of Neck

Recently purchased a Kentucky KM-300E four-string, solid-body electric mandolin. Had it set up professionally and it's a dandy little piece for jazz and swing.

The problem is the finish on the back of the neck. Kentucky used some kind of thick, glossy finish on the neck and the heat from my hand has caused the finish to bubble away from the wood. I'd like to remove the finish entirely from the back of the neck and it's not an expensive piece so I'm not too concerned about doing it myself. I just don't know what to use or how to do it.

Any help out there?

Since you are not that concerned about it, just start sanding with 220 and then up to 600 or so until it is as smooth as you like it. With the finer grits of paper you will be able to feather the edges of the transition from finish to wood smoothly. You may need to polish the transition area with some meguires or 3m product if you want it shiny there.

I just did this to my Morgan Monroe
Here is a link to the topic, and how I did it

Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't take it right down to the wood if I didn't have to. The finish has actually bubbled away from the wood in a couple of spots, so I'll most likely have to take the gloss off completely.

I'll add a post later and let you know how it turns out.
