Any significant tonal differences between the Collings MTO and the Hester F4?

More than I would have thought. The Hester is warmer, deeper, and fuller. The Colling is bright, light and precise. I have noticed with a softer touch, the Collings provides a fuller tone then when I first got it. Both are great playing Celtic and fiddle tunes, but just approach them differently. The Collings, playing Irish on the higher notes, makes one think of a penny whistle.

Very nice indeed - I have a 'similar' trio. They all sound 'different' which is why i still have them - different day, different sound !,

I could not agree more Ivan. Add in the short neck Mandola (wrote a cross-picking ditty on it the other day) and GOM (Guitar-shaped Octave Mandolin) and I have a mandolin type for all moods. Then throw in a banjo (some would prefer throw out), guitar and fiddle (the only instrument my dogs do not like me playing, an indication of my playing not the instrument) and I am covered. Picked up my guitar the other day and was surprised how much fun it was...is.
