I got a couple of the new Tortis picks
available at FQMS and elsewhere. They're as
close to the real deal as you can find, and
they hold the edge better--no more constant
polishing and buffing. They run $20.

No financial interest, just happy to find
a replacement.

$30.00.....Been using the same couple daily for over a year and haven't had cause to polish or buff yet.

From 35 to 50. There is a guy who comes to a jam that I attend makes them. We have a guy in the Seattle area that deals in them fairly heavy.

I have some blanks that I made from an old tortoise shell cigarette case. I found it at a little antique mall and the man sold it to me for $40.00. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Haven't used it all yet.

having never seen or used a tortoise shell pick....how would i determine a copy from an original? i've read that the copies look, feel, and sound a lot like the real thing.
just curious.

Heat up a pin till it is read hot....stick it in the TS pick and you will smell something like hair burning....if you smell plastic burning.....well.....

Northeners might call it a needle http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I touched one of mine i was not sure about the other day. I also touched a plastic one to it also to compare the smell. The TS is real. It didn't really melt but it did burn a small place ( in the middle of a big pick). It stunk bad not really as good as burning hair more like burning fish. the plastic pick smelled like burning plastic. I thought afterward that I might not have had it in my hand cause it could have caught fire.

You have the real thing there; burning TS smells really, really bad and overtly organic. Once you've smelled it, you will know it next time. It's similar to hair burning, but nastier.
