Looking to upgrade and I have narrowed it down to these two. They are both the same price but the Eastman comes with a case. I realize that the Eastman will lack some bells and whistles but I am only interested in playability. Anyone care to throw in their two cents?

These instruments are both solid choices . They are a step up from the level entry instruments and will last you several years if not a lifetime. They do have tonal differences so playing them before buying either is recommended. R/

I'd go for this Eastman MD305 in the MC classifieds for $400 with hard case:

Or you could go with this Kentucky KM505 for $400 from the MC classifieds:

I'd ask the seller if it comes with a case. If not, you can get a hard case for it for about $45. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004PFWZHM

I'm partial to Eastman, but that Kentucky looks mighty nice too.
From the info provided and the sellers who are listing them, they would most likely be well setup already.

These are the two I am considering. I almost got an Eastman 305 for less than $300 on CL but someone offered more :/

edit: I have inquired about set up for both. Awaiting responses.

I'd take the Kentucky because it says Kentucky on it.

I'd go for an Eastman. I have a 315 and it sounds and plays better than the Kentuckies I've been able to play

Just bought an Eastman 305 last weekend. I bought it at Madison Music Store in Madison, WI, and the owner gave me a great deal.

I am very happy with my choice to go with the 305, I loved the 515 as well, but the 305 was more in my budget for now.

Good luck in your search, I liked buying a mandolin I could actually play and buy on the spot.

Kentucky will probably have a somewhat more traditional bluegrass tone, where the Eastmans can sound a bit more modern. Setup will determine playability on either one though. As has been stated, both solid choices that could be lifelong players.

Having owned both Eastman and Kentucky, I would opt for the Kentucky.

Buy them both and resell the one you don't want to keep
