Wow!... Jerusalem Ridge

So after hearing the tune Jerusalem Ridge a couple of times on Pandora (not sure who the artist recording was) I did s little Google search and found this YouTube vid of Chris Thile and Tim O'Brien... quite awesome!!!

Yea Chris has practiced a lot in the last four years, so I have to assume he is much much better. :)

I love hearing the contrasts between how their approaches to their breaks. And their right hand styles are very different as well.

All I can say is WOW! Tim O'Brien is totally great, coming up with some really cool and surprising licks, I loved him. So controlled, such economy of movement.. Then... you see a true savant play. No one on the planet plays like that! Maybe not even Dave Apollon.
Could you imagine having to do a mandolin duet with this guy?

I know I'm committing mandolin sacrilidge by saying this, but I actually find Thile's playing here difficult to listen to. He goes so far off the melody that if O'Brien wasn't playing I wouldn't even know what tune he was playing. The skill level is off the charts but I just don't get this style of playing.

This is actually one of my favorite modern performances. The energy is unbelievable but they stay within the boundries of the melody. Teriffic playing.

I look at it differently. I would guess that Chris Thile is very adaptable player and works with his duet partner. I think he did what he did in response/reaction to what Tim did. Chris was likely looking for some interesting contrast to Tim's control and economy.

I think Chris would have improvised differently with a different duet partner, certainly always over the top, but something to make the duet somehow larger than the sum of its parts. Just my thoughts.

I really enjoyed this... I feel they did a great job of sticking to the melody, and then rambling a bit... I think it shows true mastery. Pretty great stuff. They compliment eachother. Yin and Yang.
