Ale Möller's Swedish bouzouki neck (first 9 frets). Note quarter tone frets at 1.5, 3.5 and 5.5, and extended (bass-wise) fretboard on the two bottom strings.

] = nut
o = spot a pinpoint capo may be placed on a single course of strings

Tuning at 0th fret/nut is C-G-D-A-E. #So the two bottom string open at their extended nuts would be A and F

Just got back from seeing Aly Bain & Ale Möller (http://www.noside.com/Catalog/CatalogArtist_01.asp?Action=Get&Artist_ID=26) in Harrisburg, PA. They were excellent!

You've got to see/hear Ale Möller and his ever-evolving Swedish bouzouki (he calls it a Swedish mandola). More quarter-tone frets on it now and now the fretboard for the bottom 2 pair are extended for lower notes.

If it's even remotely possible for you to see one of these shows, you really should. They just played last night in my town in Mass, and it was some of the finest music I've heard. These guys are both master musicians and the tunes are just beautiful. I'd never heard Ale Moller before, but even his reputation didn't prepare me for this. He's a brilliant player and a friendly and joyful performer. He stood around during the intermission with his "mandola" (a truely amazing instrument)and answered questions from the few players in the crowd who could remove their jaws from the floor.

I believed they announced they would be on the Prarie Home Companion this Saturday night.

I had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing the Ale & Aly show last night in Minneapolis. The three hour drive each way was well worth it. Great playing, great tunes. Both men clearly were having fun but Swedish Ale was about as joyful as a musician can be.

Moller's modified octave mandolin (at least that's what he called it last night) was something to behold and it looked just like Nile's diagram to me. He gave the following URL for people with more questions: http://www.luthiers.nu/
The site's in Swedish but the photos tell a lot. I'd love to try a couple of those pinpoint capos.

Aly Bain had a great time exaggerating Garrison Keillor's mis-pronunciation of Ale's name on PHC the night before. Several times Aly referred to Ale Moooooller!

They said they plan to record a 2nd CD for Northside records in the near future. Thanks to Niles for starting this thread because I would have missed the concert otherwise.

that is not the swedish bouzouki, that's the "låtmandola" which is a kind of a mandola. The swedish bouzouki don't have any quarter notes or extended nuts (not usually anyway, but of course anything is possible.)
It's buildt by Ådin & Ekvall. The instrument itself is developed by them together with Ale Möller. They live about an hour from where I live.

I ordered my låtmandola ten months ago and on saturday I'm finally going to have it in my hands! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif cannot wait!

I will have four extra frets for quarter nots, pin point capos to play in A and H (that would be B...), as well as sopme other useful pin point capos.
The E string will also have an extended nut (if that's what you call it?) so that it is D, but there will be a pin point capo on it so that it easily can be played as the regular E. I believe this is the first mandola that they've ever done this with, beacuase they decided to experiment a bit with this one, and in fact Ådin was so pleased with this mandola that he wanted to keep it himself, but he didn't have time to build another one for me at this time...so he had to give it up. For me! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Anyway, Ale Möller is amazing, I've had the chance to watch him perform quite a lot of times, and I hope to meet him again and show him my own mandola http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
