Oh, I should probably say - for me, the section on James Hartel, early banjo, minstrelsy etc is a highlight -

If you can find a copy, the book "Hearts & Hands - Musical Instrument Makers of America", is well worth buying. I found a copy over here in the UK a couple of years ago.

Saw the last half. part of the banjo and the Matin. Was interesting. Did not look like they has a violin or mandolin maker though.

Came in on only the last 10 minutes Martin part. Show looked great. The big benefit:

FINALLY my wife understands why I've been so picky about finding the right tortoise-colored pickguard for my (new to me) '10 custom shop 00 w/ pyramid bridge, supposedly '20s-era Ditson-spec.

It's an amazing book about some equally amazingly gifted people,& i loved every word of it. No 'big' company names, just people who loved their music & enjoyed building the instruments on which to perform it,

Finally found a time when they were running the program, and got to watch it. (Saw a few of my inlays from back in the day...)

There are several copies available via Amazon, some over in the US.Just wanted to provide and update on this book. I got a copy in the post recently that I'll be passing along to a friend for Christmas. Not so much a book to read, but a huge, coffee table-size volume with thick glossy pages and seriously high quality photography. I've only briefly flipped through it and liked what I saw a lot. I recognized some of the mandolin maker's names from my years here on the Cafe, and getting a glimpse into the lives of the people who make them, and the places they make them, was great. Do grab a copy of this wonderful book if you can find one.
