There is a thread over in the general discussion area regarding mandolin "dings" and I thought this would make a wonderful subject for some photo's!
Here's mine - 1995 Flatiron F-5. I got a bit careless at a local bluegrass jam and noticed this little beauty after a night of hot picking. I'm not a fan of pickguards, but it would have prevented this...

Kind of a ding... a nice 1959 Gretsch Jet Firebird that I'm restoring for a friend. Amazing what a genius can do with a Skil saw and a can of black Krylon (I won't show you the front...I can barely stand to look at it myself...)

Probably a bit more than a “ding,” but here are some photos of a mandolin I bought last year (2004). It was a lovely bowlback that UPS decided would make a better flatback. (For what it's worth, UPS did ante up on the insurance claim, but as the instrument was irreplaceable it was small consolation.) Look only if you have a strong stomach.

Operaguy, that makes my neck split seem almost trivial !
take more than 2 clamps and some epoxy to fix that.

Walter,
It's one of the cheapo Infininty ebay specials, looks fine but sounds TERRIBLE even fixed with new strings, flat, dead bass and tinny top end, might try a new tail piece and bridge
Keith.

Good news. Bad news. Fresh ding to go with my already distressed top. Good news is it goes under the pick guard, bad news is I was stupid and put it there in the first place.

Questions of the week...
How do you know when you ding a distressed mandolin?
Does it affect the value?
Hmmmmmmmm?

I guess I added another $100 to its value without thinking about it. Where's my screwdriver.

Doug, Are those "beauty" marks on the Silver Angel? Guess those 3rd Fridays in Cleburne are wilder than I thought. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
