it was my grandfathers. He had it a long time. Since the 60s at least.

Very nice. Very cool, especially with the family history behind it. Just the type of thing some might yearn for.

Is the question mark in the topic title indicating you aren't sure if it is a 1954? If it is, it should have a "4 xxxx" type serial number stamped on the back of the headstock. See:

and scroll down to the "Gibson Serial Numbers, 1952 to 1961, solid body models" section.

Mine is a 1959 and follows that SN convention.

I still question the year of mine. It has no number at all on the headstock. I had it at Carter's in Nashville, someone there thought very early 50's, but without digging inside couldn't say exact year.
Anyone have a guess?

IM pretty sure it is. I do believe it is a 1954 serial number. I just don't have it in front of me and the pictures were on my computer. Ill give it a look later.
