Howdy,

I'm a banjoholic, but I offered my cousin some help in identifying a mandolin. She bought it at an auction in central Saskatchewan (Rabbit Lake, to be exact). We would be grateful if anybody could tell us something about this mandolin, such as manufacturer, vintage, value, etc.

Thanks!
Doug

Early 1900's. American made, entry level. The pickguard appears to be painted on, the staves are large and there aren't many on the back. Less than $100.00. Probably made in Chicago, possibly by Lyon & Healy.

The headstock profile, and the "butterfly" pickguard shape, remind me of the Supertone bowl-back discussed in this thread. (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?101242-Trying-to-Identify-Supertone-Bowlback-Mandolin)

Supertone was a Sears, Roebuck house brand, with instruments made by various manufacturers, mainly in Chicago at the time this one was made. So Lyon & Healy is a good guess.
