I have a short scale guitar that I want to convert to an octave mandolin. How would I figure out the scale of the instrument off the frets alone? The bridge is missing and it may or may not have a zero fret. Any suggestions.

Measure from the edge of the nut to fret 12's very center, then double this for the true scale.

Or if it has a zero fret, measure from the crown of it instead of the front of the nut.
