Sorry, but I couldn't find enough info using search.
Can you give me some info for a good startersmandoline (A-model).
Normaly I play the guitar, but like the mandoline very much.
Some recommendations please.
I already had in mind an Epiphone MM-30 or even better a Kentucky.
TNX in advance

I forgot to mention that I live in Europe, Here is of course a long tradition of bowlbacks, and some brands or products are unavailable, and others that you never mention are quite common.
Stagg (chinese, very cheap, but not so bad) - Lakewood (German very fine guitars) - Furch (Czech also fine guitars) - Holoubek (Czech) - Lebeda (Czech) - and a whole lot of a luthiers from Great-Britain. (Freshwater)

A mandoline webstore in Great-Britain (http://www.theacousticmusicco.co.uk/)
a german webstore (http://www.musik-produktiv.de/home/home01g.asp/sid/!06082002)

Czech mandolins are well worth investigating. I spent months looking at American mandolins before finding a Czech one that was just as good but much cheaper. I have a Peceny F5, and it's easily better than some american f models that cost the same price (this is not because the US models were bad, it's because I live in a country where everything is overpriced).

adgefan,

What country do you live in?

Don't you have Wal-Mart?

HERE´s (http://www.hboetzkes.com/) a link from the mandolincafe that is somewhere in Europe. They have lots of nice mandolins. Maybe give them a note to see if they have any starter mandolins.

Don't you have Wal-Mart?
Yep, we have the largest Wal-Mart in the country just down the road from where I'm sitting. They didn't sell mandolins last time I checked.

The American dollar is pretty weak. Isn't there something on our own Classifieds that looks interesting??

It's true that the dollar is weak against our euro, but when a product arrives we have to pay import-taxes (21% thank you very much). I know this, I had some bad experience with it. (They hold your product in, then they start some investigation whether the product is what it says on the label, you have to make some calls, and at some day (mostly when you're not at home, they are standing at your door with a bill that you have to pay instantly. Since you're not at home...I think you get the picture and it make buying from the US not a real option. Strangely I also bought some stuff from Canada, and everything is working fast and no extra import-taxes (Canada is a member of the Gemenebest, I guess. And the import rules between Great Britain and Europe are regulated.
But anyway many thanks for the tip.

In fact my question is not really where can I buy a mandoline, but what specific brands do you consider as a decent starter mandolin.

Mid Missouri might be what your looking for. The Epiphones arnt bad. Picked one in a music store the other day. Fun to play. But all mandolins are.

There is a Mid Missouri M-11, all Mahogany in the classifieds for $400 (I think). Aall the discussion seems to favour that model, I have an M-4.

I have a Korean mandolin by a company called "VENSON" that's pretty decent. I picked it up at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) trade show where it was used for demonstration purposes.

It's solid mahogany, not a lamanate, and plays and sounds better than one would expect from an inexpensive import. I thought about selling it when I got my Rigel, but decided to keep it as a beach mandolin.

Unfortunately I have no idea who sells them or what they would cost in a store. My guess is that they are in the $3-400 range.

You can see pictures of it in the "Post a picture" section under the heading "Mike's Toys."
