Andy has built several new "Scout" mandolins, his take on the old Army-Navy model. This one features ebony back and sides, engelman spuce top, James tailpiece, Waverly tuners. Here's a video link from his website:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61eaGvSJP4k

That is one sweet mandolin, and brilliantly played by Mr R. Nathan as well.

Nathan Redelphs is a friend of Andy Poe. In addition to his youtube recording of the ebony mandolin, Nathan can be seen playing two other Scouts, both featuring non-traditional mandolin woods.

Beautiful tone and performance of Thile's Jessamyn's Reel.

Andy Poe just sent me another video of Nathan playing the same Scout mandolin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys9gQDNOHKU&feature=youtu.be

I find this recording at least as impressive as the first.

WOWZERS!

Based on the two videos, the tone of the Poe makes this Loar sound thin...

Does Andrew still build traditional A and F models ?? I remember a few years back his postings here were drool worthy !! The workmanship was just entirely too clean !!!

The tune played after 24 seconds intro by Nathan Redelfs on on the Scout Mandolin #60 2 video is "Tam Linn" also known as the "Glasgow reel" composed by Davey Arthur

You commented on Andy's workmanship. Here are some photos of the build process of the ebony Scout. There are also a few shots of the woods used for the two others that were part of the group.

Congrats cayuga red, that is an excellent example of Andy Poe's work. As the proud owner of Scout #53 (Redwood/Rosewood) I fully appreciate the high level of craftsmanship, beauty and tone. These are great mandolins!

Nathan - Your playing does the instrument justice. Typical responses I've received are:
1) I didn't know a flat top could sound that good; 2) Who knew a mandolin made with ebony back and sides could sound that good.

Andy Poe has perfected the flat top model. His A and F styles are also top tier instruments.

Thanks again. Red

Isn't it time for a separate "Show your Poe" thread? I'd contribute.

Andy Poe has perfected the flat top model.

'Twas this thread that finally convinced me to get on the waiting list for one of Andy's Scouts. I have long been a fan of the flattop and think that Andy makes the finest looking and sounding Army-Navy mandolin going.

I understand completely. I don't think I've seen a more visually perfect A4 than Andy's #27 (see excellent photos in his gallery (http://www.poestrings.com/instruments.html)).

I'm hoping that Mike Black has me covered on the carved oval front...

I think that's a safe bet. Mike's A4s are among the nicest on the market, too.

Unless it has been sold subsequently without my knowledge, I think it’s pretty clear from this thread that the answer is cayuga red.
