I'm new here, and somewhat new to mandolins. Been playing fiddle for 30+ years and decided to try mandolin again.
Found a "de-electrified" 1950 Gibson EM-150 on eBay and couldn't resist. That's the "sort of". Why anyone would gut an electric mandolin is beyond me, but whoever did this one did a very nice job. In fact they must've replaced the entire top because there's not a single trace of where the original pickup and volume and tone knobs were mounted. The location of the 1/4" jack and plate has be very neatly filled and the holes where the pick guard was once mounted can still be seen. Anyhoo...here she is:

She plays wonderfully and intonation is perfect. I intend to re-install the electronics and use some sort of 4-pole Tele type neck pickup (an entirely different subject) then string it C-G-D-A.

Different strokes for different folks, why someone would electrify a mandolin is beyond me, anyway a nice looking job of removing electronics.

Same reason folks amplify acoustic fiddles, guitars, pianos, basses, dobros, washtubs, spoons, harmonicas, etc. ;)

Like I said, surely someone replaced the entire top, but even at that, it was very well done!

Thanks,
