One-piece Sitka top (from Bruce at Orca's), one piece back from a local lumber yard. Saving a ton of cash on using half the strings and tuners. Quite pleased with this one.

Kidding aside, why single courses? I mean, there's a specific reason, right?

Very cool! I like that four string sound in some genres, but I have yet to try a four stringer.

To me, the question isn't why single courses, but rather the reverse. If you don't consider tradition/habit, and don't have to compete with banjos for sheer volume, I feel that single courses are more versatile. Vibrato and other string bending being perhaps the most obvious benefit. Also, by now I'm more used to four strings than eight, and the double-courses just feel clunky and strange to me.
