Having just gotten an e-mando I wonder about the subject of Pick-ups. What kinds are best? Can my Mandobird be improved by new pick-ups. If so, what kind?

Chime in anyone with info.

I'm a P90 fan and you can get mandolin P90s from Seymour Duncan. I don't know what it would take to get them into a Mandobird though.

Hacksaw should do it.

seems to be a pattern, here, get a mandobird, want a different pickup, right away, or is the mandocafe gang a skewed sample?

How can you call a group with severe MAS skewed? We're just curious - in search of the perfect sound.

In general, unless you use mandolin specific pickups like those built by Steve Ryder (which I highly recommend) you are best off compromising with a blade-type pickup. Guitar pickups just don't seem to have the right amount of pole pieces for mandos, and bass pickups are structered for the wrong part of the frequency spectrum. They will all work, but these picky mando players want perfection.

I don't necessarily think it's a skewed thing, a friend of mine in the microphone business who is not really a mandolin player said immediately upon getting on "I gotta get a better pickup in this thing..."

I think it's a "buy something because it's cheap then wish it had better parts" thing. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I admit #to #doing the same #sort of thing to #my #8 string FM61se , I put #another #pickguard plate together on It, concentric-double gang #pot [got rid of V pot in the wrong spot]; EMG #strat sort of pickup (a stack blade humbucker) ; and a switchcraft jack.

I am considering putting the improved FM61se 8 string, on the FS, a bit of MAS detox, {made payment on a 5 string, so its litter displacement, actually)

Steve Ryder should be able to set you up with a better emando pickup. Seems he'd have a slew of happy customers if he had something easily retro-fittable onto the Mandobird.
