I just received my new J Bovier F5Z today, and could not be happier. It looks great, sounds great, and is very playable. It has really nice sustain. I love the neck profile, as it is a little rounder than the Eastman MD305 I had, but still has a slight V-shape to it, which I think suits me better. I chose gold hardware, black tuner buttons and a gold Allen tailpiece.

Nice. Just curious, where did you get it? Jeff hasn't listed the F5Z for a couple of years now and I didn't think he was still producing it.

I initially contacted him about an F5S, but he had already sold all the first ones made for 2015. So, he had six of these made, three blonde tops and three black tops, and offered me one of those. Mine is the first of the new 2015 batch.

Very nice.
The wood looks beautiful.
If it plays and sounds anything like my JB F5 Special, I am sure you will love it.
They make a really nice instrument.

Your Zebra wood McClung will work out nicely.

Love the blonde top with the gold hardware and black buttons. Great looking mandolin. If it sounds and plays as good as it looks you should be one happy camper. Congratulations. If you haven't already, you should consider joining the Bovier social group.

Thanks, it does sound and play great. I did join both JBovier social groups (there are two), but one of them hasn't been updated in quite some time.

Very nice. It's great that you are able to select some options in the finish and hardware. Enjoy it!

So, you've had your new F5Z for a few days now. What's your impression so far? Hope you're getting in some quality time with the new baby!

I wonder what the different tonal characteristics between zebra and maple are?

It's really an excellent mandolin. It's just so comfortable to play, and it's very responsive. I don't know what else to say other than it sounds fantastic, and I'm really enjoying it. I really can't say what the tonal differences in the wood are, as I don't have anything to compare it to really.

Keep on posting. We love that great J Bovier with the zebra wood! By the way, I have two of the Lakota leathers -- a flat plain one and a braded two-tone. Great straps and a good cause, as well!
