Hi, can anyone tell me the difference between an A4 and an A5?

Thanks

A4 has a single, round (or oval) hole. A5 has two f-holes, one on either side of the strings.

An A4 has an oval hole and usually the neck joins the body at the 12th fret. The A5 has f holes and the neck joins the body at the 15th fret.

Perfect, thanks so much for the replies. I am a guitar player about to take the jump into Mando. I have a lot to learn.

At least what most of us call an A5. The Jethroe burns A5 had 2 points and an oval whole.

All A-4's are vintage instruments made prior to WWII (though I suppose some builders have made copies). There is only ONE vintage A-5 (if you have another one, PLEASE let us know). All other A-5's are modern instruments.

Yeah, I forgot about that one. Not a bad instrument. Still a vintage mandolin. They stopped making them around 1970.

Can get confusing... no?
