Sure had a swell time at the Mando Tasting event held in Lawrence's historic Liberty Hall last night. I think there were 32 Mandolins entered in the event. Mike Compton played the Mandolins and Ken Cartwright recorded each instrument played. Mike played 32 Mandolins in about an hour. He was asked if he wanted a break but he kept working straight through. As Ken told the audience, whenever we hear "The Girl I Left Behind" we will think of Mike Compton playing that same song 32 times! Actually, he played it more than 32 times with 2nd, 3rd and 4th takes http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Some of the Mandolins did not have fret position markers which led to some difficulty.

It was interesting to hear the variations in tone among the Mandolins. There were some mighty fine instruments in the lineup - 27 Gibson Fern, Brentrup, Kimball, Gilchrist, Summit, 2 different Bill Davis Mandolins (one was mine) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif, BRW, Collings, Rigel, Daley, Pomeroy, Triggs, Vega, Sawchyn, Hillburn and a host of others.

Lots of builders in the crowd last night too - Jim and Ryan Triggs, Will Kimball, Bill Davis. Peter Mix, from Rigel, was there too.

I had a hard time trying to ID the one I liked best as so many of them just sounded great. I'm sure Mike Compton had a lot to do with that. I'm looking forward to the recording when it comes out. I spoke with Ken for a bit afterwards (what a nice fellow!) and he said he would like to shoot a video of the Mando Tasting next year and have it out on a DVD.

Thanks to Scott T, Ken Cartwright, Mike Compton and all those who worked to make this event happen. Mando Tasting and Mandofest - the perfect combination!
