Hi,

I am a novice mandolin player, and I am getting my chords down, and wanted to play some songs for practice. The internet has tons of tons of songs done out in guitar tab. So I am using that. But some times I see chords that I don't know if they exist on mando. Like A5 for example. Never seen a 5, I have seen 7's and 9's and m7's and M7's but no 5's. What do you do on mando to replicate?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If I am wrong I think someone will correct me, but I believe a x5 would be a "power chord," meaning a first and a fifth (leaving out the 3rd). So, for instance, an A5 would be an A and an E, the 1st and 5th.
I convert guitar tabs all the time, it is great for learning the fretboard.

dwc,
Your right x5= 1 and 5th tone of the major scale.

MinorSeventhMan,
"some times I see chords that I don't know if they exist on mando". You only have 4 tones that you can play at one time but you should be able to play the tones that are necessary to suggest the right chord.

Good luck.

I would think in most cases playing just major of the chord would be fine.
The power chord on guitar means the bottom 2 strings of a barre chord. You could do the same for the G-string rooted barre chord on the mando, just muting the A and E strings and going up the neck:
A5: 2-2-x-x A: 2-2-4-5
B5: 4-4-x-x
D5: 7-7-x-x

Or inverting the root and 5th:
E5: 4-2-x-x E: 4-2-2-4
F5: 5-3-x-x
G5: 7-5-x-x

To emphasise the root, isn't it normal to reiterate it on the octave?
A5: 2-2-0-X
B5: 4-4-2-X
E5: X-2-2-0
For more raunch add in the 12th (octaved 5th - eg for A: 2-2-0-0) or use octave tuning - gives just a hint of the 12th in the mix, yum.

Get a copy of Niles Hokonen's (sp?) book "Madolin Chords and How to Use Them".

Think upside down and there you go,
EADG [be] #GDAE p4/p5 -> <- depends on which way you go
less strings but notes ascend; 7 frets rather than 5;.. to next higher unison/octave.

Oh thats right the other two strings are the high melody ones, with the funny intervals,
