I went and saw Mark O' Connor last night in Frederick, MD. #This was part of his Appalachia Waltz tour. #He was accompanied by Carol Cook on viola and violin, and by Natalie Haas on cello. #The musicianship was superb. #Anytime you can see Mark play a duet with a cello on "Lime Rock", you jump at the chance. #Alas, no mandos were pulled from any cases, but, the sheer beauty of the arrangements blew me away. #Their classical treatment of fiddle tunes and originals is truly inspiring.

It should be noted as well that Mark is a very accomplished guitarist and mandolinist, and has written extensively for the mandolin. His mandolin compositions are available in PDF downloadable form.

I read he has given up guitar......Gruhn's had several of his instruments, including a Heiden guitar for sale awhile back. I got to hear him play quite a bit of guitar back in the days he was in the DGQ. I also saw the tour with Edgar Meyer & Yo Yo Ma, the first of the Appalachia Waltz tours years ago & Mark broke out a mandolin for one tune. But my fondest memories are of Mark putting down the guitar, picking up a violin and trading licks with Stephane Grappelli on Tiger Rag back in his DGQ days. I also saw a solo show once where for the encore he fiddled while riding a skateboard around the stage. Of course he was much younger then.......

On his website. Just Google Mark Oconnor and you find his sight.
I've listened to some of his mandolin music, and it is beautiful, yet complicated. Reminds me somewhat of Thile's more textured compositions, such as his caprice When Mandolins Dream.
Speaking of caprices, Mark has written 6 for violin and they are on Youtube. Just wonderful music.
I plan to download his Caprice #1 for violin and one of the mandolin pieces today.
