First of all I did a search and nothing came up. With that being said.
Is there a thread on making your own strap? If not, could someone direct me to a site or video on how to make one. At present I'm using an old guitar strap that's been modified.
BTW- I really like the thin ones.

Here's a link (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?37831-Make-your-own-mando-strap) to an old thread. I mention an older thread in post #9 but it seems to be a dead link. Perhaps someone knows how to ressurect that thread.

Many ways to make a strap, from a simple strip of leather or other substance, to complicated round or flat braiding techniques. I've tried several ways and always had fun doing it.:)

The simplest leather strap that requires no tying for a loop is to take a strip of leather and cut a longitudinal slit in it beginning about a half inch from one end. Open up this slit so it becomes the loop that goes over the scroll. Then cut a hole in the other end of the strap to fit over the tail pin.

Here's a strap I made several years ago out of buffalo leather. Only a little more complicated.

Hartz Mountain small dog leash, clip the clip off, poke a hole and make a smaller slit that you think you need, carefully work it over the end pin, handle end around the scroll. Five bucks.

I went to a craft shop, bought an inexpensive book on weaving leather, and made my own strap. It works and it's one of a kind.

i normally don't use a strap but if i am carrying an uncased mando for a distance I will make a strap out of baling twine, as used by farmers to bale hay. Incredibly strong. But the best thing about it is how it turns heads compared to the other players who have big buck leather straps on their mandos.... The ultimate "hay seed" strap.

On my heavy metal resonator mando I use a standard boot lace. Very strong and inexpensive.

LOL! Are you talking about the plastic/polymer string they're using these days? Usually green or orange? I have a whole 55-gallon drum full of that stuff from years of stuffing it in there when I cut open bales for my horses. I sent some to a friend whose wife weaves them into rugs and doormats, but I never considered them for mandolin straps. Hey, you should start a line of Hayseed Mandolin Straps. With authentic bits of hay sticking out of the string. It can't miss!

On a side note, I also have a bunch of used bailing wire stuffed into another drum. I wanna see you make a mandolin strap out of that!

Mandolins are so light that I just use a piece of rawhide with a hangman's noose (ala Sam Bush). It works great.
