Strap locks?

So I'm looking for a strap because I want to play standing up (live, sitting down is lame :D). I've found this one that looks pretty good http://neotechstraps.com/mandolin-strap.html

The one issue that I have is that the back part of the strap just kinda loops over the pin (like cheap guitar straps do). That is kinda worrying as I know how easy it is for straps to pop off the pin. I use strap locks on my guitar, but I don't see how that would work on the mando (back pin on my Loar is plastic).

So how do I do this safely? Should I buy this strap or is there a better alternative that would be safer?

Tie the strap to the tailpiece with a leather thong or a shoelace. Use a plastic bread wrapper sealer for a strap lock. Use the $29.50 you saved to buy strings.

there are plasic ones you put on the strap , but the assumption is around the screwed in buttons on guitars

I have a neotech strap .. over the Jack-end button its fine, Tight.
(+ you have the cable to the amp, that wont let the strap slip off


for the one to the button on the side of the Neck, I sewed across the slit
to make it fit tighter ..

get out the Needle and thread .. its not that hard to do..
the leather is thin
(you can glue * on thicker leather too. )

if you are willing to glue a plug in the end of the body ,
then you could use something other than the common tapered Pin ..

Given people have have had the Pin itself come loose ..

but getting Paid you have to put on a show .

Though sitting and reading your part off the Music stand
does not preclude getting your fee.

I've had really good luck with these straps (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/dandrea-locking-nylon-straps) and like the D'andrea straps better than a planet waves leather one that cost me about 4 times as much. There is also a less expensive planet waves model (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/planet-waves-2-polypropylene-planet-lock-guitar-strap?pfm=sp) with a different locking system, but they don't roll up as compact as the D'andrea which fits better in the case.

Keep one hand on the mandolin at all times no "lock" is fool proof!

Cut a circle of leather about 1.5 inches in diameter and put a hole and slit in the middle to mimic a strap attachment. Put this circle outside your strap (most buttons allow a second thickness of leather into the groove). Turn the slit so that it points a different direction from the slit on your strap. The result is (so far) foolproof. Whereas one strap can slip off, the strap with the second thickness of leather outside it cannot. As well as being (almost) free, it's pretty much invisible.

I have the hole taped to make it more difficult to come off. BUT: I also have a piece of fishing line through the strap hole and tied to the tail piece as mentioned above for the thong. I feel very comfortable with this arrangement and very uneasy with out the extra protection.

A rubber spacer ( about 3/4" dia) is available from a hardware store. They are not so thick that they don't fit, but the hold the strap secure. A solution that costs only a few cents.

I would NEVER again use a strap that has hard plastic or metal on it! I'm sure you can guess what happened when I did. And, I agree, one hand always on the mandolin. (Another bad experience):(

NB:
They put a spot of Fleece (self adhesive velcro it seems )
ON THE SIDE THAT TOUCHES THE INSTRUMENT.
