I'm thinking of picking up a high end electronic tuner. I was wondering if anyone could help me decide between the ones that I see, or perhaps point me to others.

What I'd probably expect to do is have a permanent setup that included a mic, probably mounted on the mic stand that is already in place for my recorder, but not necessarily in line....So no matter what I'm doing with the recorder, the separate mic/tuner setup would be operative.

The ones I'm thinking of are:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a VS2 and actively didn't like the experience of using it. I've been in high-tech for longer than I care to admit, and have never ran across a VCR that I couldn't program, but in the VS2, I met my match.

I use a Boss TU2 for stage and recording. Also have a TU12 as a "house tuner". Been very happy with both.

i would go with the VSAM or VS.
unless you are lugging around a bunch or rack gear, i dont see why you would need a rack mounted tuner.
i personally know many professional touring acoustic muscians, and they swear by the VS, i havent gotten one yet, because i have accumulated 20 years worth of all sorts of tuners and just dont know if i need another one. but if i was going to drop the $$$ on a premium tuner, it would be the VS/VSAM. as far as the difficulty in using one, i will say, a strobe tuner does take some getting use to...its not a red light / green light type of device. the power in these is to 'temper' certain notes, which on the mandolin, is not so neccessary, but if you played pedal steel....you couldnt live without this function.

Well, thanks for the comments, guys. I have a TU-12, and it's quite decent. I'm going to try to find a store that has some of the others in stock to check out.

Reading the specs, the petersen strobo stomp version includes a DI in it, so that may make it more useful for big house snakefeeders. loZ XLR Out + HiZ 1/4" I/O, 9vDC I/O.

Since it was not mentioned I have to ask: Are you using a clip-on pick-up with your tuner? I purchased a Boss TU 12H with a clip from Eldery about eight years back, still works great. I use this for setting bridges, tuning at noisy stage settings and acurately tuning up with an keyboard. Don't know why you would need more than this for mandolin/stringed instrument tuning.
