Incredible work! Is the dragon hand carved or done with a machine?

All of our carvings are done by Astrid, completely hand carved. I build the instruments and apply the finish.

Kudos for the zero fret. How did you calculate the total effective sound hole area?

You are both getting better and better. That is a lovely instrument.

Lovely work. As a woodcarver myself, I'd be interested to know whether Astrid uses hand tools - chisels and gouges - or power carving tools (or both)? I can't imagine the sort of softwoods used for soundboards being very easy to work with and get clean cuts without razor sharp tools. Hats off.

Mandocarver--Astrid uses a combination of the tools you mentioned, including Exacto knives, Excalibur scroll saw for the negative space, a combination of rifflers, and a Dremel with engraving bits.

Here are some photos of the original drawing and its transfer to the top.

That is just beautiful work in every way, as usual. You two are quite the team! Thanks for posting so many great and detailed pictures.

My question is whether some kind of extra strengthening is needed underneath, to compensate for the depth of the carving?

Thank you bratsche! Depending on the scale of the carving, but in most cases no. We start with a thicker top, and after the carving is complete I work the remaining top down to the thickness desired.
