I alternate between guitar, banjo and mandolin when playing in my band and currently have an Ashton 5-gtr rack to hold guitar and banjo but a separate Kinsman stand for the F5 mandolin. I'd like to use just the one guitar rack for all instruments, but the mandolin is obviously too small---it could hang from the neck holder but wouldn't be supported at the bottom so therefore could swing and fall off. I need some ideas as how to support the mandolin, eg, a clip-on bracket to one side of the rack. I may have to make something up out of wood or metal but what? I fold the rack up for transport to and from gigs so I'd like the attachment also to be easily detachable.

However I'm surely not the first mandolinist in the world to have encountered this problem!! I've emailed the Ashton company asking if they do any clip-on brackets but sadly they haven't replied.

So guys, what ideas can you come up with? Thanks in advance.

Depending on the design of each, you could zip strip a mandolin stand to the frame of the guitar stand. I haven't tried it but I have a Hercules 5-guitar rack A frame. I think an A-frame mando stand could attach quite easily to the inside of it so I could utilize the movable neck slot on the guitar stand.

Hercules makes a 3 way stand with a locking yoke...works perfect on every instrument I have....from a itsy bitsy mandolin to a 13 lb Gibson banjo. Never had an axe fall out yet....see below

I have a seven-space guitar/banjo stand, and wanted to put mandolin "hangers" on it. I bought two tool hangers (http://www.lowes.com/pd_267942-46882-24183VELLG_4294646759__?productId=3721836&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNs%3Dp_product_qty_sales_dollar%7C1&facetInfo=) at a hardware store, along with some doweling. Drilled a hole in each end upright of the stand, slid a length of dowel up inside each upright, screwed the tool hanger into the dowel. Now I have a seven-space stand with a mandolin hanger at each end, and I spent less than $5 on the materials.

I also play guitar, banjo, and mandolin when I gig and have used both a double Hercules + the String Swing on my mic stand, as well as the triple Hercules. putting the mandolin on the mic stand makes me nervous between sets that it might get knocked off. the Hercules locking yoke is why I switched to the triple stand.

I have a 7 instrument rack like this:

and a clip on mandolin hanger like this:

Hanger is attached to one end of rack and works well!

Thanks for your replies, guys.

I've checked out both the String Swing and Anuenue types which indeed seem to be the only makes of clip hanger around. But only Anuenue says what the gap across the prongs is. The specification that I read was 8.9cm deep and 7.6 cm wide. My Gibson has a nut width of 3cm and a point-to-point across the head width of 6 cm near the nut. So that means the mandolin would be resting on its tuners rather than on the wooden head, which is unsatisfactory. Mind you, the item seems to be marketed by both companies as a ukelele/mandolin hanger. Perhaps ukes are wider and the item is meant for them, with mandolin use only as an afterthought?

Can anybody confirm exactly where the mandolin would be supported by one of these clips, or attach a picture? They don't seem to be available in English music shops so I can't try one out for myself!
