I had posted a note about beginning a new Mandolin Society in Indianapolis awhile back but could not find it to add to it, so this is an update. We have formed the Mandolin Society of Central Indiana and are going to have our first playing meeting on Tuesday, March 9 at the First Friends Meeting at 3030 E Kessler Blvd in Indianapolis, IN, from 7-9 pm. Our voice mail is (317)216-3966, and email address is mandolindy@egix,net. Any thoughts, suggestions and ideas are certainly welcome.

What towns/counties were represented? I live in Oakland, CA, but I grew up in Connersville, Fayette Co., and wonder who might have shown up from my old stompin' grounds.

Even though I missed all but the last half-hour, I came away pretty motivated. After the talk of maybe needing conductors, I logged onto the library site this morning and put some how-to conducting books on hold.

Plus I'm going to try learning alto clef.

This was a blast for me. A bunch of mandoholics in one gathering place... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif My wife just laughs at that...Studying f holes and all....talking scrolls and finish.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Seriously, I think it has a lot of potential if Boyd can womp on that Mandercheller a little more... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Can't wait to get it going full speed.....The vega cylinder back that I played though made it all worthwhile! I'm still trying to get spud to sell that Randy Wood F-5 to me for 250 bucks.......

Bummer. I missed it. I missed the initial post, but I'll be there for the next one. By the way, there will be some workshops at the Bluegrass fest in Columbus, IN this coming weekend. If anyone is interested, please email me.

I'll make it down sometime. I'm up here in Goshen - 1/2 hour south of the Michigan/Indian border. We call this region "Michiana". Hmmmm...

On another note, a friend forwarded some email that included this:

The acclaimed Nashville Mandolin Ensemble will perform at Arts Place in Hall-Moser Theatre on Saturday, April 3 at 8:00 p.m. The program will range from Bach to Beatles to Bill Monroe. Led by Butch Baldassari, the group includes some of the finest string musicians in Nashville.

Wish I could go! Might try and change my schedule to make it... Where's Portland, IN?

Portland? Thats surprising. It is a small town between Ft Wayne and Muncie on Hwy 27. I think it is a short drive from Dayton.

Portland is kind of out of the way. They have a surprisingly active arts community for such a small town. I'll be there!

How could I have missed the meeting? I will be at the next one I hope. I do see my picture is on the website from the Compton workshop. See everyone there! Guess I need to know what tunes will be played so I can brush up...

Right now there's no real set tunes. We're trying to come up with songs that work with everyones ability and also do harmony parts with them. Right now we've got Golden Slippers, Whiskey Before Breakfast, and Ashoken Farewell with multiple parts that we've worked on. I'm going to work on making a cd for the group so that we can all work on parts. That way if anyone is lacking a recording of the tune, they have a resource to use with a slow recording and the traditional speed that it's normally played at. This is the goal right now along with folks contributing tunes that would work well as an orchestra with multiple parts. Bring whatever you think would work to the table. We're all there to have fun and better yet...play mandolin.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Mandoryan,
Where is there someplace to play in Taylorsville? Must be a private party?

Hello all, James here. I really enjoyed the meeting the other night, I thought it was a great start. I think, to make progress, we need to focus on some specific ideas, so I asked David Greunder to take the next meeting (March 28 at 2 pm) and work on some of the fundamamentals of ensemble playing. This will (hopefully)get us all working together as a unit so we can start thinking about performance. We might start working on a light classical piece or maybe a Scott Joplin rag. I want us to have fun, but to move forward we need some structure and I think David has a lot of knowledge and skill in that area. Does that sound interesting to anyone? I will post more information on the web site.

thistle,
# It's actually at the Antique Mall there by the Outlet Mall. There is an open house there and we were asked to play for a couple of hours while it is going on.

James,
#Sounds good to me. I think structure is definetely a good thing when it comes to a big group of mando players. Could be worse though, could be a banjo orchestra... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
We could spend the first hour or two tuning, then plays some songs..... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

mad dawg..
You are correct sir. Johnny Cougar was born and raised in Seymour. He now resides down on Lake Monroe, close to Bloomington, IN.

mad dog you are correct. I was actually very close friends with his two nephews they lived just 2 blocks from me. my mother went to school with him and was friends with his sister so I kind of know him in a round about way. I was going to build him a mando and my mother was going to send it to his sister to give to him but I can seem to get ahead of the pickers who actually are ordering them.

Hey John J, I might actually make it down to the NME show in Portland - I'm working on delegating authority for our next dance (April 3rd) so I can be there. Many other factors may get in the way, but I'll try. Anyone else going?

For that matter, MSCI folk, there might be some people in Portland and/or at the concert to recruit for the MSCI. Somebody might try contacting the concert producers in Portland and ask if flyers and/or an announcement might be presented at the NME show? Heck, Butch might even give it a pitch if you contact him and ask politely! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Hey Thistle,
#Sorry I didn't make it back here sooner. I just noticed you had responded on here. We played from 3-about 5:30 pm.
Dang, it, I'm sorry. I wasn't blowing you off I just honestly didn't catch the thread in time.
Did you happen to catch the Columbus shows? I went and saw Special C on Sunday and really enjoyed it. Nice guys. Were you there? If so, I probably saw ya. I am the tall, blonde guy that wears sandels when it's not so warm out, green cargo pants, and grey shirt. I was sitting right, front. Our banjer picker said he went down for Kenny and Amanda Smith and said they were smoking! Wish I woulda made it to that one. Again, that dang hindsite....oh well..... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Wow! The interest you ll are showing in the MSCI is great, I just wanted to say thanks, especially to Boyd for starting this thread and Ryan for helping out so much on Tuesday. For the next meeting, and the workshop on ensemble playing, I think there will be an arrangement or two for mandolin orchestra that I can get ahold of. I am not sure yet what the songs are, but as soon as I get them I will post here. Thanks again everyone!

James,
I think the society is a great idea. I think it has the potential to be a great resource to mandolin players, as well as the community. I'll try and drag some people from Columbus up to the meeting. Do you have any type of format for the meeting? I think it would be great to discuss some of these issues here, since we can get feedback from a much larger group also.

Thistle,
We are making our way one step at a time. For the next meeting one of our members is giving a workshop on the Fundamentals of Ensemble Playing, which I hope will get us started thinking as a group oriented toward performances, and becoming a mandolin orchestra. We are also looking at a fiddle tune of the month program, and hopefully some outreach into the community in the future. I would like very much to link with your group in Columbus. If you can make it on the 28th please do, and bring some people. I am always looking for ideas. Thanks

Hey, we just bought tickets to the NME show in Portland on April 3rd. Have a babysitter lined up for a long night out. It's a 2 hour drive (at least) to Portland from Goshen. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif We had to drive further than that when we saw Simon Mayor and Hilary James the first time around...

Hope to see you many of you all there... Would be really cool if we had time to jam before or after, but with a 2 hour drive each way, I think we won't stick around too long. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
