I just stumbled across this duo, and am really enjoying the selections on myspace. Some of the mandolin stuff sounds very Mike Marshall inspired.

Anyone ever heard of either of these musicians or any of their other work?

Thanks,
Baron

Yeah, I know Petri. Besides mando (and big mandos), he also plays guitar and fiddle.

He was in Ottopasuuna (2 CDs), and The Helsinki Mandoliners (2CDs). Besides the duo album with Marku Lepistö, he's also got a solo album (Kirjo). He also was in the band (Aldergaz) of Maria Kalaniemi, my all-time favorite Finnish accordion player. She's great, subtle dynamics, phrases like a jazz horn player. He's on her Iho and Ahma albums. There's probably some more recent stuff which I don't have.

Petri had played in a bluegrass band called Speed Limit and an Irish band called Korkkijalka, but that was 20+ years ago. He's usually in Lumisudet (The Snow Wolves) which is what my brother Erik's (Hokkanen) band of Finnish musicians is called when he's in Finland and Scandinavia. There are a couple CDs out in Finland of EH & Lumisudet.

Marku Lepistö is also a really good accordion player. He was in a great band called Pirnales. I've got three of their albums; there's probably several more.

Petri also was in a U.S.-based band called Freshet; they put out a CD in 2005:

Thanks Niles and Martin! Thats just the sort of info I was looking for. I love Maria's music as well, great stuff all around.

So much music, so little time!

Thanks,
Baron

Don't forget Petri Hakala's great solo album "Trad."
