Sorry, you'll have to show up at Mandofest on Friday, April 8 around lunch time (right after the workshop with Stiernberg) when the pizza and drinks are on the Cafe and my pals Jim and Ryan Triggs of Triggs Mandolins and Guitars (http://www.triggsguitars.com/). Location: either at Papa Keno's (http://www.lawrence.com/places/papa_kenos_pizzeria/) pizzeria or at Liberty Hall on Friday afternoon--I haven't decided yet, but probably on the back patio outside at Papa Keno's. Hey, Mandofest is just getting started at that point. This is for anyone coming to town for Mandofest. BTW, Don Stiernberg, John Reischman and Evan Marshall have all dined here after the workshop and gave it thumbs up. So this year, this addition to Mandofest was a must.

Papa's continually gets rated the best pizza in this college town, and for good reason. Hand tossed with superb ingredients. Local Free State beer on tap. Now, should I go with the blue cheese/anchovie/garlic slice, or the basil/almond/garlic/chicken slice? Then there's the white pie, which with added garlic and a good single ingredient is hard to beat... So many choices.

Yuuuuummmmmmmm.

Bummer. I thought this was going to be one of those "free stuff for the first 5 to reply" threads.

One of my favorite hours of Mandofest 2004, sitting on the back porch at Papa Keno's having pizza with a few great mandolin players! Let's see Tichenor, Eschliman, Horton, and oh yeah, somebody named Reischman! Great company, lots of diverse conversation, and the pizza...!! The best!!

Pizza and mandolins!! Dan

The basil/almond/garlic/chicken pie sounds best to me.
I used to try and call in my favorite anchovy/jalapeno/shrimp and they always thought it was a prank call.
The best pie I ever had thou was in Carmel at the Forge In The Forest - crispy duck, goat cheese and portabellas. # Yum! # Outdoor patio with my dog at my side, cold pitcher of beer, feet up on the fireplace and mando in my lap. Wish I had never moved away.

I also wish I could attend the Mandofest with you all back there!

There's usually a stale crust "bone" hanging around the house Saturday mornings. Would you like me to mail one to you with a Cafe sticker?

Papa Keno's ROCKS !!!! I'm from Wichita, & whenever I come up to Big L for a show at the Granada or to Mandofest etc... Papa Keno's is always figured in on the stop. One question though........ I'm playing in the Mandofest Orchestra, and there is a rehersal scheduled right after the workshop from 12:30 to 2:00 Friday afternoon......which sounds like prime pizza time to me.... ( aren't you in the MO Scott??) so wazzup wit dat ?? I WANT MY FPK.....!!!!!!! (free Papa Keno's) Wes Mc

I'd anticipated this. I think we'll convene at Papa's at 11:30 for pizza and I'll have one or two of the monster pies ready at that time. When the workshop is over those folks can join us--they go until 12:00 and it'll be 12:30 before they make it over. All of the orchestra folks can dine and get their fingers good and greasy for the rehearsal. Since I'm local I don't have to attend that session as it's mainly for out-of-towners... and besides, it's my festival so I can do what I want!

Wrong! Here's the story on Papa Keno's so at least you'll understand. I've had good NYC pizza and it is superb.

The guy that owns PK's grew up working in a pizza joint for the original Mr. Keno somewhere close to NYC (New Jersey I think) and worked there all through high school. Apparently Papa Keno was what they called him--an older fatherly type guy. Kid comes to school at University of Kansas and finds out quickly that pizza + Kansas = Pizza Hut or something resembling wet cardboard with bad tomato sauce. He takes some college pals home with him during his sophomore year and they absolutely flip over the pizza shop where he worked as a kid. Light bulb comes on. He returns to Lawrence, takes out a loan for $5K, drops out of school and opens a tiny shop downtown by himself with one or two helpers and within days people are lined up around the corner to get a slice. Short story is he now owns something like 5-6 restaurants in the area and has several hundred people working for him. Done quite well for himself.

Tonight you might as well forget about ordering a pizza after about 5:00 with the Jayhawks playing in the first round of the NCAA. Usually a 2+ hour wait around games or they just tell you they aren't taking orders.

I am do for a donation to the cafe so don't be suprised if a pizza comes with it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif . I've heard that some pizza places across the country have the NY water (secret ingredient ) delivered to them.

http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Yep, NJ has a lot of NY transplants so lots of good za to be had here. In my travels, I've found that the ONLY good pizza outside of the NY/NJ area is made be people who are from here http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

And http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif added for mando content. Pizza and jams always go well together! Wish I could make it to mandofest.
