I'm working on it. I'm doing Tim O'Brien's arrangement, but I'm having a time with the second break.

Its just about all I've been playing since I started this mandoproject. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I'm new to this forum.

What's the address of the Yahoo site?

Is Tim O'Brien's version available somewhere?

Thanks!

If you want to post, you can do so at (after registering with Yahoo):
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/mandolinproject/

To listen to previous efforts (no Blackberries yet):
http://www.mandolinproject.150m.com/

For tab (including Tim O'Brien's version):
http://www.mandozine.com/music/tabledit_search.php
(You'll have to download TabEdit to use these.)

Dave, I don't know if its yours or fiddlegit's or not but I couldn't pull up the file at mandolin project's site.

I'll go over to the yahoo site and check it out over there. But I don't think we can listen to files over there, can we?

dave, #you've done a great job of spicing up this traditional tune. #i really like what you did in the second half of it. #is that your own improv or did you get it from somewhere? #my intention was to record this tomorrow, but i see i've got some more work to do. #thanks for the inspiration!

p.s. sorry i took so long to get up on the mainpage. #my home computer is S # L # O #WWWWWWWW . . .

Thanks, Craig. #I've been trying to play Blackberry Blossom for about as long as I've owned a mando (A Way Whole Long Time), so this is what my fingers happened to find that mostly fit the progression.

(Actually, this recording was also an excuse to try out my new toy, namely a bass.)

D.H.

Edited to add: Come to think of it, I guess I learned that version of the B part from Lou Martin.

Dave, I liked it. I listened to it on the Yahoo group.

Just as Craig said, listening to somebody else here play it has inspired me to work a little harder on it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I have uploaded my version of Blackberry Blossom. Comments and suggestions are welcome!!

I'm interested in hearing what instruments and recording chain people are using.

So to kick things off, this version was recorded with the following equipment:

Kentucky KM380S Mando
Taylor 410 LTD
75 Fender P-Bass
Old Harmony Lap Steel
Eastwood Baritone Guitar

MXL990 Mic
ART V3 Preamp
Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine

All audio is run direct into my PC Sound Card then Cakewalk Home Studio. Mixing is done thru headphones.

Hey, a new twist on an old tune! Sort of the Ghost Riders in the Sky surf version? I enjoyed it.

I record on a Boss 864 with an SM57. The recorder has a built-in drum machine, which I didn't use this time. I used a Taylor 414 for rhythm guitar, Essex J bass clone, and a Flatiron A5 Jr.

Check out Monroe's version on John Baldry's site... it's all opposite to what one normally tries to include...classic de-constructionism....

Could you give an URL for that? I found "Long" and "Short" John Baldry sites in Google, but didn't find the Blackberry Blossom there.

Here is another version of Blackberry Blossom (http://world.std.com/~ereilly/blackberry.mp3) played by a great old-time fiddler. He just happened to play all his fiddle tunes on the mandolin.
That would be William Smith hisownself Monroe, in case you wondered.

Got mine finally uploaded to the project.

Now remember, I am a newbie. So be nice. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I really enjoyed working on this, and will probably keep working it to get better. Of course, there is a lot of work to be done.

I'll try one, since I haven't submitted anything in a while. #Once again, it will be the bare bones, one lead one back-up, version. #My bluegrass friends always wonder why I play them so slow... to which I reply, no skills! My primative attemps show up under farmerf5,#Oh well!

Search and pluck, Dan

Great job everyone with Blackberry blossom! It's so nice being able to listen to everyone's recordings. At home, with dial-up, it takes too long time downloading them but now I'm at my boyfriend's house.

I actually did my Blackberry blossom today too. I think it's a difficult tune, because I have to play on the G strings, which never give a good sound, so it's not great but its ok. Quite a sudden end too because he just has cool edit unregistered so I can't do certain things....but, my first contribution in months. It feels good!

Finally, I get one in on time!

Just got my Blackberry version up. This is a tune that I have had working under my fingers for quite a while - it was fun to get a chance to really buckle down and play with it a bit.

To continue the earlier thread of what the recording was made on, here is my list:
Mando - Collings MT
Fiddle - Juzek
Guitar - Seagull S6 Cedar
Bass - Peavey TL-6
Microphone - Rhode NT1 condenser
Hardware - MOTU 896 interface, Mac dual 2gHz G5
Software - MOTU Digital performer

Hope y'all enjoy! I know I am enjoying listening to all of you...
