Yep, that's the one. They do Grier numbers, Chris numbers, fiddle tunes, Big Mon, Big Sciota, Lady Be Good, others. CT was still a teenager.

I remember when this made the initial rounds, caused quite the buzz.

You know these people are good, you see them live in a rehearsed setting and you go WOW, then you see/hear them on these types of stages, and there isn't words to describe...

One thing about that weekend, Chris and David were both teaching at the Roanoke workshop, the next morning after playing until 1am at the Prism, probably 1:45 drive from C'ville, Chris was propped against the class door at 8:30am, mandolin in hand practicing, waiting for someone to open the classroom.

Interesting, I was actually at the Prism show and Winterhawk where this workshop was filmed. I actually stealth recorded the Prism show on a minidisc recorder and it came out very good. Interesting to hear some of the "acoustic" properties from the third row perspective. It is not complete though, I think I ran out of disc space after 3 hours! I haven't listened to them since getting a copy of the soundboard years ago. I would be happy to dig them out if anyone would like to make a "matrix" recording using both sources. This show should have been made into a commercial CD as it was such an awe inspiring display of musicianship by both David and Chris. I met him wandering around Winterhawk with his mando slung around his shoulder and after seeing him play that weekend I knew that the mandolin world as we knew it was about to be turned upside down.

I was at that show at the Prism Coffeehouse too, though I got there late as I was hosting my radio show on WTJU before the concert. Right before they played Lady Be Good, they talked about hearing me on the radio plugging their concert, and gave me props for getting their names right! (Back in 2000, Thile wasn't exactly a household name, like he is now, and many people pronounced his name wrongly.) One of the best shows I ever experienced..they were both on fire!

Was the Prism still over on Rugby Road at that point?

I went to college when it was over there, but I was gone long before 2002. Nowadays I think they have something they still refer to as Prism coffeehouse, but I think they hold that at Cville coffee.

Yes, the Thile/Grier concert was held at the original site of the Prism Coffeehouse on Rugby Road. After the original Prism closed and several years of inactivity some volunteer members from the local music community wanted to revive the Prism and made a working arrangement with C’ville Coffee to be able to host the shows at their location. The second iteration of the Prism has continued to grow for the past 5 years and the music being presented has been pretty incredible. You can see a photo history of the past Prism shows presented at C’ville Coffee in the ‘Prism Archive Photo Tab’ on their website https://prismcoffeehouse.org/. Although a still relatively small venue (maybe 115 max) they have been able to create strong support for the gigging musicians we all love. Unfortunately like every other venue the Prism has had to go on hiatus with the Covid-19 lockdown but the plans are to start up again as soon as things normalize.

Partly I miss the old location, but mostly I miss being able to go to shows there without driving 400 miles!
