I have a Gibson A-12 mandolin with a model number of 686078. Does anyone know the relative age of this mandolin? Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated

These were made from 1970-79. According to the Gruhn book the serial number indicates either 1970-72 or 1974-75.

Thank you. This is one that my grandfather left for me when he passed away. The family rumor was that it was from when he was a child. My pic investigation revealed that they story was not entirely true. Glad to have it anyway.

Your grandfather was a child in the early 70's? Don't know your age but guess it's possible if what Homer and Jethro said that "he's his own grandpa". Check it out at:
